Free Hens from Battery Cages

Right now, millions of hens are imprisoned in battery cages in the Australian egg industry.

The life of a battery hen is unbearable to think about. She will never see sunshine, never feel wind, never dust bathe. She will never walk, stretch, flap, ruffle, or preen. She will never be given enough room to have the ability to simply turn around. After 18 months of total confinement, they will gas her or send her to a slaughterhouse to be killed.

In 2023, all states and territories committed to phase out battery cages, but the SA Government are yet to commit to legislate a date for the phase out. If SA fails to legislate the phase out of battery cages, there is a risk other states will drop their own commitments to end the use of battery cages.

We cannot allow hens to continue to languish in cages.

We are calling on Peter Malinauskas, Premier of South Australia, and Clare Scriven, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, to commit to a rapid, legislated phase-out of battery cages.

It’s time to free hens in SA.
