The Animal Justice Party (AJP) welcomes the opportunity to contribute feedback on
the recent state and Voice elections. These elections, on the whole, were
professionally conducted. We commend the Electoral Commision of South Australia
(ECSA) on their timely help with questions from AJP and their information sessions
for candidates.
We note that the terms of reference relate to the conduct of the election rather than
changes to the voting system. As an active participant in politics, AJP is in regular
contact with voters and we have a large social media presence. Consequently, we
received significant feedback about the election that has informed our submission.
The focus of our submission is on confusion by voters. With a voting system more
complicated than first-past-the-post voting, it’s expected there will be confusion, but
we believe that much of this confusion can be reduced by better information
presented to voters.
The Voice election received low participation, which is a disappointment. Feedback
about the Voice election would be better informed by First Nations people and their
organisations, so this submission discusses the state election.
A review such as this typically only occurs after every election, so we welcome the
opportunity to write a submission to assist the conduct of future elections.
