Josip Ivka for Unley

Josip Ivka is an Adelaide local who has a strong commitment to justice and has long been a staunch advocate for the animals, the climate, and our community.
He sincerely wants to make a positive difference in this world, striving to aid the most vulnerable. He brings a well-paired blend of science and empathy-focused activism to everything he does.
Unravelling drivers of the climate catastrophe, Josip came to the same realisation as many Australians: animal agriculture causes more destruction and suffering than any other industry on the planet, yet its impact is meticulously hidden from the public eye. He understands that ending all forms of animal exploitation is paramount to the survival of life on this planet.
Josip has a background in electrical engineering, specialised in renewable energy, which he studied abroad in Germany. In his work, he is intimately involved with customer energy resources – solar, batteries, electric vehicles and others, helping South Australians enable the critical transition to clean energy. He is well-liked and trusted by his peers, a passionate union advocate, and loves to mentor budding engineers to achieve the best they can for the world, their local community, and themselves.
Josip loves going hiking and spending time in nature, always searching for local wildlife to snap pictures of. As someone who will always go out of his way to help an animal in need, he supports various TNR (trap, neuter, release) and adopt-don’t-shop programs for cats and draws energy from his adopted fluffy grey cat Lulu and loving wife.
Josip is also very passionate about languages and culture, having mastered German while living abroad to complete his studies, and is currently in his 5th year of learning Japanese. He has also been a volunteer for almost 6 years for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at his workplace, striving for a welcoming workplace where everyone can shine as their genuine self.
Josip will campaign in support of an official declaration of the climate emergency, and important local issues such as tackling the algal bloom, in hopes of a future for all South Australian animals and people.
