Lionel Pengilley, Lead Candidate for the Legislative Council

Lionel Pengilley has a passion to improve the lives of people and animals through building a more just and sustainable society. An outlet for his passion is the Animal Justice Party, where he is currently the leader of the party in South Australia and previously the treasurer. He believes that animals, people and our planet deserve a strong voice in parliament, and that’s why he is running for the Legislative Council.

With a background in quantitative analysis, he brings a needed perspective to public policy. Lionel is about to submit his PhD thesis to Adelaide University on the topic of industrial change. His thesis examines the nature of industrial change in peripheral locations in Australia and the connections between the old and new industries. This experience sparked Lionel’s interest in transitions of unsustainable animal exploiting industries to sustainable industries of the future.

In addition to research, Lionel teaches undergraduate students, demonstrating his ability to explain complex topics succinctly. Beyond animal issues, he is dedicated to influencing positive change in energy and housing affordability, specifically he is interested in undoing the damage caused by privatisation.

Lionel previously stood as an Animal Justice Party candidate in the 2025 federal election. He is now focused on winning a seat at this state election so that we can build a more kind society for all.
